I know I just built a Hackintosh, but its stability has been grating on my nerves as of late and I hate not being able to update the OS easily. When I find myself using my MacBook Pro, everything seems more natural, and that’s what I want in my desktop too. I’m going to sell the Hackintosh to my boyfriend so he can have a better computer that he won’t need to ditch for several years, and I’ll feel more at home with a shiny new iMac.

I’ll have less RAM, but I hardly used the 16GB I have in here now outside of video conversion.

I saw a post going around that apparently was a godsend to Tumblr users with directions on how to convert text to upper or lower case using Microsoft Word.

For those of you with Macs, this is present throughout most OS X applications that includes text entry. Highlight some text, then find this menu.

This doesn’t seem to be present in Chrome, but then again I’m using Chromium. It’s definitely present in Safari, Tweetbot, Evernote, Day One, TextWrangler (under Text > Change Case), and probably more. Just dig around. If you have to, just use TextEdit.

Inkist is a new drawing tool for Macs running OS X Lion or later from Tai Shimizu.

It’s been on the Mac App Store since early May, and I only managed to hear about it through Mac.AppStorm’s review of it about three weeks ago

I haven’t been drawing enough in the past two years. My favourite app Scribbles stopped development when Loren Brichter joined Twitter, not to mention I’ve been having serious self-esteem issues about my ability since I dropped out of a graphic arts degree at the community college where I used to live.

I saw the screenshots, debated for a while and ultimately decided to drop the money to try it out. I sketched a little something and I was pretty satisfied with its features (except, for now, the lack of layer transformation options). I wasn’t satisfied with my drawing though. Another day, maybe.

Now is this the Paint Tool SAI for Mac we’ve been looking for? I’m going ahead and claiming this as the mythical application all the Mac-using artists on Tumblr are looking for. (To be fair, though, I’ve actually never used Paint Tool SAI, but my SAI-user boyfriend says it’s very similar after watching me use it.)

The next question is, how many of you are willing to drop a whole Hamilton to use this and realize it’s not for you? My answer is I’d sit tight and wait for Inkist Lite to come out. The only limitation I can gather from the app’s website is that you can only use up to three layers.

Reblogging myself to update. Inkist Lite has been out for a month, apparently. Maybe those of you looking for a SAI for Mac may find the low price of free acceptable if you’re willing to only use three layers.

Minimum system requirement is OS X 10.7 (Lion).

So now a bit of time has passed since the event has been broadcasted at Apple.com, now the entire event is available to view at any time here. I’ve arranged my thoughts on this under the cut.

The 13” Retina MacBook Pro

Expected to see this. Basically the 15” unveiled earlier this year but smaller, and with dual-core i5 processors instead of quad-core i7s. Most likely what I’d get if I felt the need to update my current MacBook. Waiting for the Retina models to become the “standard” models before I jump on it. It’s cheaper than I expected, starting at $1699.

The Mac Mini

There was something Mini that was going to be unveiled today, right? Right. Seems they’ve updated the processor to the i7, added Thunderbolt and USB 3 ports. Typical spec update, basically. The higher-end Mac Mini includes an option for a 1 TB “Fusion” drive, which is just Apple’s fancy word for an HDD/SDD hybrid drive, and includes 128 GB of solid state storage. Should be enough to store all your applications.

The (Ridiculously Thin) iMac

I joined the stream late and saw the tail end of this unveil. I saw the iMac getting priced (the exact same, still) and I’m sitting there like “holy SHIT that thing’s almost anorexic!” It’s 80% thinner! The iMac hasn’t seen a thickness change since 2007 so this is way out of left field.

There’s tons of configurations for these babies, since now you can’t upgrade them yourself, or at all! 8 GB RAM standard (good), up to 16 GB, all sorts of processors and starting with the 2.9 GHz configuration of the 21.5 inch iMac, you can get a 1TB Fusion drive. Higher configurations give you the option of a 3 TB Fusion drive.

iPad 4th Generation

Just a processor and connection update. If you’re still kicking an original or a 2, like me, I’d go for it. Honestly I thought this came out a bit too early, but I understand the holiday season is coming up so… whatever.

iPad Mini

The main event. This thing has the same specs as an iPad 2 but with a smaller, 7.9” diagonal screen with a 1024x768 display at 163 PPI. Steve may be rolling in his grave but this device is sure to be a hit. Comes in the same colour configurations as the iPhone 5, which looks rather nice but I don’t plan on getting one.

Conclusion

From what I was seeing during the presentation, Tim seemed to be tripping over his words every once in a while. He still did okay, along with the rest of the the presentation team. However, I’m glad this was done live, and it’s actually what I’ve missed about Apple product events. I felt like those that weren’t broadcasted didn’t have video put up for at least a few hours. This went up rather quickly, so I hope in the future they do more events this way.

I didn’t catch any liveblogs because something stupid happened in my life and I just wanted to take a nap, but again I’ll be eating my words and feeling dumb for misunderstanding post-Jobs Apple.

Anyway, here’s my post-keynote opinion on the products just introduced the other day.

First, iPhone 5. It’s got a 4” (diagonal) screen, which height-wise is actually only .37 inches taller, but whatever the case I’m absolutely sure I’ll hate once I actually get a hold of one, but I probably actually won’t. Otherwise, the iPhone 5 has the new A6 chip, LTE, a better FaceTime camera, the ability to take photos while recording video, and it looks fucking beautiful to boot, but that 4” screen is a girlboner-killer. The fact that Apple called their sixth iPhone the 5 is sort of confusing at best. It has iOS 6, it has the A6 chip but it’s still the 5. I guess that’s just what the public expected. The iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order come Midnight, Pacific (so about 45 minutes after I post this) and will be available to purchase on the 21st.

The new EarPods that come packaged with this phone (and sold separately for $29) seem nice. I may consider picking up a pair if they’re well received for the kind of music I listen to. I like my $80 in-ears (with $15 Comply foam tips) but I don’t want to lose those.

I don’t really have anything to say about the Lightning port. John Gruber mentioned that if Apple sees a technology that’s past its prime, they abandon it. I guess that’s okay. We’ll see how this plays out in the future.

The new iPod touch has the same screen as the new iPhone. No, it’s apparently the exact same screen, so we know it’s good (aside from the height). It comes in white, black, blue (which will no doubt be the three most popular colours), salmon, and piss green. It has a sort of lanyard loop for some reason.

The iPod Nano stopped being a watch in favour of a design akin to the Nokia Lumia 900 with shitty circular “app” icons instead of the usual rounded squares. It’s got Bluetooth and some of those other features. Comes in white, black, blue, salmon, piss green, lavender and mint. I plan on picking up the sixth generation Nano at a reduced price.

Nothing was really announced for iOS 6 since the last time so I don’t have anything to say other than it’s coming out for public release on Wednesday. The GM is available now if you know where to get it.

A new version of iTunes was announced as well. 10.7 came out the same day but an all-new version, 11, will be dropping next month with a… radically different interface. I’ll talk more about it another time. Meanwhile, iTunes’ social network Ping will be axed on September 30th. We hardly knew ye, old friend.

The Instant Messaging Dilemma

Before I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I was actually preparing myself for a switch from Adium to the new Messages, mainly because of its iMessage integration. I also have accounts with “legacy” chat protocols, slapped on an weird autoresize script from deviantART, and managed to get MSN working using the abandoned* Cocoon plugin. Still works now, surprisingly enough. iChat was set up to my liking, and then I got Messages. I still have my auto-resizing buddy window, but the chat window has this sidebar I severely dislike. Also for some reason AIM keeps disconnecting. Also I don’t actually have any iMessage friends.

Meanwhile, I love the customization of Adium and had it set up to a way I liked. Plus, the MSN support isn’t some unsupported janky hack that’ll never get updated again. But! No iMessage support… yet, apparently, and also Adium doesn’t support A/V chatting, which is what I use Skype for anyway.

Basically I’m one of those fucking weirdos that wants to whittle down my app usage to one thing that does a bunch of specific types of things I want to do, this case in particular being I want one application to access all sorts of instant messaging protocols, even odd ones like iMessage and Steam.

Apparently this is way too much to ask so I guess I’ll just juggle IM apps when I actually start getting people to want to text me over iMessage. Whatever.

Verdict: Adium is really good, okay? Okay.

Up and running with Mountain Lion! (Total reinstalls: Three)

~$1,100 worth of parts (most of them from Lifehacker's budget Mac Pro-like build, different GFX card I believe)

The netted cables that came with the 750W Rosewill modular PSU: neat!

After my boyfriend assembled everything. (He's the hardware guy.)

Meet my new baby: The BlHack Pro.

It was a pretty draining 12 hours getting it up and running yesterday but I managed it. It’s about 98% there, I’m still having trouble with the audio driver.

It was a learning experience for me and the result was well worth it… except for lost desk space.

I’ll post details on the build later, if anyone even cares.
